Job Description

North Seattle Vet is looking for a full time Licensed Veterinary Technician or experienced Veterinary Assistant. Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years’ hands-on experience in a clinical setting and a willingness to learn and grow long-term within our practice. They will possess a positive "can-do" team-oriented attitude, be willing to jump in wherever needed, have keen observation and people skills, excellent spelling and grammar, proficient computer skills (we use digital medical records), astute attention to detail, and a great sense of humor.

Our LVT’s and Assistants work very closely with our doctors and clients to check in patient appointments, take patient histories, transcribe doctor notes and observations during exam, prepare estimates and explain medication and discharge instructions with clients, fill prescriptions, obtain lab samples and other room tech duties. Candidates must also be proficient in IV catheter placement & care, ability to confidently perform technician-only visits for vaccines and other routine patient care, provide client education and preventative care, assist and restrain for procedures, run lab samples in-house (IDEXX) and prepare samples for send-out, perform radiographs, clean and pack surgical instruments, provide loving care for patients, boarding pets and our two beloved and goofy clinic cats, possess a knack for cleaning and organizing, and will enthusiastically support our core values. The ideal candidate would also be proficient in (or passionately willing to learn) surgical assisting and monitoring, performing start to finish comprehensive dentals including full mouth x-rays and extractions.

This position is full time 35 - 40 hrs/week and requires weekday shifts up to 10 hrs including weekday evenings, Saturdays, and some holidays.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent

Current WA State Veterinary Technician license or Minimum 2 years clinical experience in an Assistant role

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Previous animal care background is required; 2+ years preferred.

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 18 years old.
  • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed, ill or in pain.
  • Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
  • Is well-spoken and approaches his/her job duties in a mature nature and does not entertain gossip in the workplace.
  • Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of hospital team members.
  • Has excellent client communication and people skills.
  • Has excellent spelling, grammar and written communication skills; including knowledge and pronunciation of veterinary medical terminology.
  • Can reliably fill the required schedule on time and consistently without recurring schedule conflicts.

Physical Effort:

  • Work requires lifting, carrying and restraining animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs). Walks or stands for extended periods or time; frequently works in a bent position.

Working conditions:

  • Will be exposed to stressful situations, unpleasant odors, noises, X-ray radiation and animal blood and excrement. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.

Tasks & Duties:

  • Can provide consistent compassionate care daily to patients and clients.
  • Can conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks.
  • Can legibly keep accurate medical records in accordance with Federal and State laws, and hospital policy.
  •  Can effectively and efficiently use common workstation, laptop and tablet computers; able to type 40 WPM; able to learn new software systems with ease and proficiency.
  • Can prepare and maintain the exam rooms and treatment areas.
  • Can perform physical assessments; record observations legibly in files or computer.
  • Can safely and effectively restrain pets even when large or difficult.
  • Understands all common vaccinations and vaccination protocols and can explain to clients and support staff.
  • Understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean or organize as part of a normal job duty.
  • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
  • Gives SQ, IM and IV injections.
  • Can handle client’s medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarians when appropriate.
  • Can prepare estimates for procedures and discuss financial commitments with clients supporting hospital medical protocols and financial policies.
  • Can explain necessary follow-up and home care instructions to clients.
  • Understands usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
  • Can help maintain an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
  • Can assist the veterinarian in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers and monitors fluids; can perform start to finish dental prophys of grade 0-4 severity or willingness to learn.
  • Can properly care for all surgical materials; keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
  • Can perform emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage and other skilled nursing.
